Praising has enormous power for transformation and engagement, however, we do not perform it frequently enough or in the right way praising only great results.
To improve this, let's learn about the 6 strategies created by Shawn Achor and published in the book "Big Potential: How Transforming the Pursuit of Success Raises Our Achievement, Happiness, and Well-Being"
1. STOP GIVING COMPLIMENTS FOR COMPARISON.
Ex.: "Your report was much better than theirs."
With this type of praise, in addition to praising one person by putting another down, we are limiting the potential of one person to the potential of another. Thus, when a person performs a little better than the other, they unconsciously stop trying to surpass themselves.
In that case, you could say "Your report looks really good."
2. HIGHLIGHT THE RIGHT
"When men give up saying what is charming, they give up thinking about what is charming." - Oscar Wilde.
In other words, if one does not intend to recognize the successes of a team, one will not pay attention to its positive attitude. This way, one will not be playing its role as a leader and will not have an engaged and positive team.
So the tip is: Keep an eye on everyone's progress and set aside two minutes every day to write someone a compliment.
3. PRAISE THE BASE
Let's give an example of one of the things that Brazilians like most: soccer
Your team was the World Cup champion. All the players were important to this achievement, not just the MVP or the goalkeeper. Everyone deserves the medal.
So why in a company do we only reward the employee who sold the most or reached its goals?
Remember that they achieved this because there are other people contributing to their work and those people deserve recognition too. They scored the goal because someone made the correct pass.
4. DEMOCRATIZE COMPLIMENTS
"A good leader praises people who lead to success. An excellent leader does not just praise, but also turns others into praisers." - Shawn Achor.
Create a mechanism or environment where anyone feels comfortable praising someone in the company, regardless of role or position.
5. UNLEASH THE POWER OF THE 31 HIDDEN
Mr. Achor presents a survey that says that 31% of participants classified themselves as positive people, but who do not express their positivity in the work environment.
So, identify who these people are in your organization and encourage them to spread their optimism throughout the company.
How?
Start by praising them! So, talk about your perception and encourage them to send a compliment via email, Teams, or another communication channel the company uses.
Remember to praise them again when they start to show more positivity.
6. PRAISE TO ACHIEVE A RESULT
When we try to expand people's potential, we often focus on past successes or results. But praise can also boost our successes and future results.
That is, we also need to praise the future behavior we want to encourage.
Ex.: "You will be an excellent leader because you care about people and the company."
